Speaking on Monday following the parliamentary elections on Sunday, former Mauritian Prime Minister, Paul Berenger revealed that the Social Alliance, headed by Navin Ramgoolam, would form the jurisdiction's next government.
According to figures in the regional media, the Social Alliance won control of 38 of the 62 constituencies up for grabs, whilst Berenger's coalition, comprising the Mauritian Militant Movement and the Militant Socialist Movement took just 22.
Turnout was high at 81.5%, with 600,000 of the country's 817,305 registered voters expressing their preference in the parliamentary elections.
Speaking on national television on Tuesday, Mr Rangoolam observed that:
"The population has voted for change. The change will respect the rules, the institutions, our political adversaries and above all the unity of the country."
He went on to reveal that the "main jobs awaiting the new government concern sugar, job creation and textiles".
